Non-Verbal Skills

Module Overview

Non-verbal communication is often more powerful than verbal instruction. Coaches communicate expectations, confidence, authority, and care before they ever speak.

This module trains coaches to use body language, positioning, facial expression, and presence intentionally.

The goal is control + connection + clarity without extra words.

“Your body speaks before you do.”

Why This Matters (VERY IMPORTANT)

Athletes respond more to:

• Tone
• Posture
• Eye contact
• Facial expression
• Movement energy

Than to long explanations.

Non-verbal control reduces chaos.

Core Non-Verbal Skills

1️⃣ Posture & Presence

• Stand tall
• Shoulders back
• Chest open
• Feet grounded

Weak posture = weak authority.

2️⃣ Eye Contact

• Scan the room
• Make direct eye contact when correcting
• Use calm gaze for control

Eye contact redirects without yelling.

3️⃣ Proximity Control

• Move toward distraction
• Stand near chaos
• Position yourself strategically

Silence + proximity is powerful.

4️⃣ Facial Expression

• Neutral for correction
• Encouraging for effort
• Firm for safety

Avoid:

• Eye rolling
• Exaggerated frustration
• Sarcasm faces

Your face sets tone.

5️⃣ Hand Signals & Silent Cues

Use:

• Raised hand = stop
• Finger to lips = quiet
• Two fingers = eyes on me
• Point to floor spot = reset

Silent cues prevent yelling.

Common Coaching Mistakes

Mistake: Yelling across the gym
→ Fix: Walk closer. Speak calmly.

Mistake: Slouching while correcting
→ Fix: Reset posture before speaking.

Mistake: Over-smiling during discipline
→ Fix: Neutral face.

Mistake: Talking too much
→ Fix: Demonstrate instead.

Class Application Drill

During a class:

• Give one instruction without speaking
• Correct one athlete using only proximity
• Reset chaos using only posture + hand signal

Practice intentional silence.

Safety Application

In high-risk moments:

• Strong stance
• Direct eye contact
• Calm tone
• Slow movements

Panic spreads through body language.

Control spreads the same way.

Conditioning for Coaches

Practice:

• Confident stance
• Clear hand signals
• Controlled walking pace
• Calm facial expression

Presence is trained.
